Should these 358 Verizon Investments have been Used to Deliver Fiber Optic Broadband to Your City, Your Home?

The Verizon NY 2020 Annual Report just came out (May 28th, 2021) — and here is a list; a glimpse of the 358 investments listed (investments over 5%). This snapshot includes Verizon Maryland — a state that Verizon controls as the incumbent wireline telecommunications public utility. It was supposed to have the original — and still existing — copper wires replaced with a fiber optic line over a decade ago, and it never happened.

NBC 4 Washington’s headline says it all.

“Digital Divide: Nearly 1 Million in Va., Md. Have No High-Speed Internet Access

• How much money was transferred out of the US to buy these overseas investments?
• How much money of budgets that should have been spent on upgrading the state utility infrastructure in say, Verizon Maryland, was diverted to fund Morocco or Nederland, or Japan, Korea or Latvia?
• What about Komunifacije d.o.o Beograd?

Notice that Verizon Maryland is listed as one of the ‘investments’ — crammed between Malta and the Netherlands.

It’s time to start investigations into the flows of money — and the billions per state that has been diverted from the public utilities — and worse, charged to customers via multiple rate increases.

Where is any investigation of how Verizon helped to create the Digital Divide? Worse, Verizon keeps telling everyone that 5G and wireless should be a substitute for the failure of Verizon and AT&T to properly upgrade and maintain the infrastructure of their state based public utilities. They were supposed to deliver fiber optic broadband — not just phone service. Did you know 5G requires a fiber optic wire to work — and they have been illegally moving billions per state out of the construction budgets of these state based wireline public utilities to build out their wireless networks?

And how much of the state-based utility monies ended up buying media and entertainment companies or other ridiculous investments that have hemorrhaged billions?
